Gold Chain Width and Length Guide

Choosing the right width and length is the easiest way to make sure a gold chain looks the way you want. Here is how to pick both.

Chain width

Width is measured across a single link, in millimeters (mm). Wider chains look bolder and weigh more.

Width Look Good for
Under 1.5mm Delicate, subtle Small pendants, layering, everyday wear
1.5mm – 3mm Noticeable but understated Most pendants, everyday chains, layering
3mm – 5mm Medium, visible on its own Wearing alone, medium and heavy pendants, men's everyday chains
5mm – 8mm Bold Statement chains worn alone
8mm and up Very bold, heavy Statement Cuban, Franco and rope chains

Chain length

Necklace lengths are measured end to end, including the clasp. Where a chain falls depends on your neck size and build, so treat these as typical guides.

Length Where it typically sits
16 inches At the base of the neck
18 inches At the collarbone, the most popular length for women and for pendants
20 inches Just below the collarbone; a common length for men
22 inches A few inches below the collarbone; a common men's length
24 inches At or near the top of the chest
26 – 30 inches Mid-chest and lower; long statement chains

Tip: to check a length at home, lay a string or measuring tape around your neck where you want the chain to sit, then measure it.

Bracelet and anklet lengths

  • 7 inches is the standard women's bracelet length.
  • 8 to 9 inches is common for men's bracelets and larger wrists.
  • 9 to 10 inches is the typical anklet length.

Measure your wrist snugly and add about half an inch to one inch for a comfortable fit.

Matching a chain to a pendant

  • Pick a chain that is strong enough for the pendant's weight. Heavier pendants need a wider or sturdier chain such as Franco, rope or box.
  • Check that the chain and clasp fit through the pendant's bail (the loop the chain passes through).
  • 18 to 20 inches is the most common length for showing off a pendant.

Adjustable and extendable chains

If you're unsure of length, an adjustable or extendable chain lets you wear one necklace at several lengths. See our adjustable chains and extendable chains.
